Turkmen delegation participates in the work of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly

The 72nd session of the UN General Assembly has started the work at the Headquarter of the United Nations Organization where the delegation of our country will give utterance to priority positions and new initiatives of Turkmenistan related to the most important aspects of cooperation under the UN and other competent international organizations. 

The development of versatile partnership with the UN is a strategic vector of foreign policy of our country. This traditional dialog, which is based on equal rights, mutual respect and long term, has acquired new specific content. This is visually indicated by the fact that independent neutral Turkmenistan was several times elected as a Vice Chairing country of the 58th, 62nd, 64th, 68th and 71st UN General Assembly. 

Besides, recently our country was elected for several times to the composition of competent structures and economic institutions of the UN including in one of six of its main bodies - he Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 013 – 2015 what was an exemplary fact in the history of traditional relations with the UN. 

At present moment, Turkmenistan is a member of eight commissions, committees and councils of the United Nations, under which it carries out its relative international activity. This impressive list includes the UNESCO Executive Committee, the Executive Committee of the Programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (on permanent basis), the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, the Commission for Social Development, the Bureau of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Sustainable Energy, the Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). The Executive Council of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), the Commission on Population and Development. Next year our country starts working as a member of the Executive Committee of the UN Children’s Fund and the Commission on the Status of Women. 

National Action Plan for human rights in Turkmenistan, Action Plan of the Country Programme for cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the UNICEF and the Action Plan of the Country Programme for cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the UN Population Fund for 2016 – 2020 are real results of successful cooperation the profile agencies of the United Nations including the UN Children Fund and the UN Population Fund. 

Framework Partnership Programme for 2016 – 2020 signed between Turkmenistan and the United Nations fully complies with priority tasks of national programmes undertaken in our country and the Goals of sustainable development until 2030 adopted during the 70th session of the UN General Assembly. 

Thus, the relations between Turkmenistan and the United Nations develop in the atmosphere mutual understanding and interest in expansion of cooperation in all spectrum. It was confirmed during the meeting of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres who visited our country in June of this year. 

Having joined the number of important UN Conventions, Turkmenistan invariably follows the fulfilment of undertaken obligations. Unreservedly recognizing the authority and leading role of the United Nations as a main guarantor of support and consolidation of international security, development of positive cooperation between all countries of the planet, our country always demonstrate the willingness to use its peace-making and creative potential to the achievement of the Goals of sustainable development until 2030. 

Foreign initiatives of our country that will be given at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly are specific steps in this direction. Support of universal peace, security and stability are defined as the key vectors of Turkmenistan activity during coming event. In this regard, special attentions is to be paid to consolidation of efforts in counteracting of the terrorism. 

Important role in realization of the tasks in this sphere, effective counter measures against other challenges and threat of today is given to preventive diplomacy. Turkmenistan actively supports the work of the UN Regional Centre of Preventive Diplomacy for the Central Asia, which was opened in Ashgabat by the initiative of our country. The opportunity of elaboration and adoption of the Resolution to support the mechanisms of preventive diplomacy in solution of topical issues for provision of peace and security will be suggested to review during the 72nd session of the UN. 

Further consolidation of the partnership for achievement of the Goals of sustainable development will also be the priority vector of the activity of our state in international arena. 

Turkmenistan defined the improvement of international economic cooperation as an important direction of its foreign policy activity during the coming session of the UN General Assembly. Utmost attention is to be paid to the development of energy and transport and communication systems. 

Turkmenistan also plans to actively participate in international efforts for solution of important issues of environment protection, management of water resources, prevention and mitigation of natural and anthropogenic catastrophes. 

Humanitarian sphere is among priority vectors of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN. As is known, our country has recommended itself as a state strictly fulfilling its international obligations in humanitarian law, uniting the principles and institutes aimed at he provision and protection of the rights of individual and nations declared by the UN Universal Declaration on Human Rights. Turkmenistan joined more than 120 main conventions and international legal documents, which majority closely related to humanitarian issues of the modern world. 

Being permanent member of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Programme, our country is an active supporter of consolidation of international efforts in provision and protection of the rights of refugees and stateless persons. 

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has initiated the participation of the Refugees Olympic team in V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which ceremonial opening is to be held in Ashgabat shortly. Taking this into consideration, it will be proposed to adopt the document on award of the Refugees Olympic team for the contribution in consolidation of peace and security in September of 2017 in Geneva. 

Besides, Turkmenistan will speak with the proposal on the conduct of the Seventh International Conference of the ministers and leading personnel accountable for physical training and sports under the UN aegis in our country. 

Activation of work of the world community in provision of global cyber security, taking into account the realities of modern world, which development is accompanied by breaking achievements in information and technological sphere, is also defined among the main initiatives of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
