PRESIDENT OF TURKMENISTAN AND UZBEKISTAN HELD A MEETING

on October 5, as part of the official visit of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Tashkent, talks in a narrow format with President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev took place.

At the beginning of the meeting, Shavkat Mirziyoyev congratulated Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the 30th anniversary of Independence of Turkmenistan and wished peace and prosperity to the brotherly Turkmen people. The Uzbek leader described the meeting as a «historic and significant event».

President of Turkmenistan thanked for the hospitality and emphasized the high level of mutual relations between the two countries. The Head of Turkmen State noted the similarity of the two country’s positions on regional and international issues. 

During the meeting, the Presidents praised the current level of bilateral relations based on the principles of centuries-old friendship, good neighborliness, strategic partnership, mutual trust and support. The leaders discussed the full range of Turkmen-Uzbek multifaceted cooperation, paying special attention to strengthening a constructive political dialogue, expanding trade, economic and investment partnership, and deepening cultural and humanitarian ties. 

Later, the talks between the Presidents of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan continued in an extended format with the participation of official delegations of the two countries.

During the talks, the Heads of State noted with satisfaction the growth dynamics of mutual trade in recent years and agreed to use all available resources and opportunities to further increase the volume of bilateral trade.

The Presidents spoke in favor of continuing a close dialogue and joint promotion of initiatives in the international arena, including within the UN, CIS, OSCE, Economic Cooperation Organization, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States, and other international structures.

Also during the talks, it was noted that peace and stability in Afghanistan is the key to sustainable development of the entire Central Asia region.

Cooperation in the water sector was highly appreciated. The success of the first meeting of Intergovernmental Commission on water management issues was welcomed. 

The sides also discussed issues of cooperation in cultural and humanitarian sphere, which is an important factor for strengthening friendly relations and increasing mutual understanding between the two peoples.

At the end of the meeting, the Presidents of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan signed a Joint Statement. In addition, more than twenty bilateral documents were signed.
